Most teams finished up their regular season this past weekend hoping to get those last available points before the regional championship tournament. Division 1 looks to be one of the best the Great Plains has seen in recent years with Lindenwood, Bethel, and UMSL at the top of the division and Missouri State and Mizzou sitting at the bottom. Though Lindenwood will go into the regional championship tournament as the #1 seed, this past weekend the Lions had two very close one goal games against the #2 seed Bethel (3-2 in overtime) and the #3 seed UMSL (3-2). If this past weekend is any indication of what is to come, then it is going to be a dog fight to the finish.
With the division 1 seeds set, #4 Missouri State will play #5 Mizzou for a spot in the semifinals. The winning team will go head to head against #1 Lindenwood University for a chance to advance to the finals. #2 Bethel will take on #3 UMSL in what is sure to be a great contest with the winner advancing to the division 1 regional championship game at 6pm on Saturday.
In division 2, Illinois State will take the well-deserved #1 overall seed going into regionals. The Redbirds finished the season 7-2 against division 2 opponents with both loses coming early in the first semester. The #4 seed Missouri S&T will take on the #5 seed Washington-STL in the quarterfinal game for chance to play #1 Illinois State in the semifinals. The season series between #2 Saint Louis and #3 Kansas State is tied 1-1 and will be decided when they meet each other in the division 2 semifinal. The D2 regional championship game is scheduled for 3pm on Sunday at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin, Missouri.
The Great Plains division 3 should be one to keep a close eye on as well. Both of Lindenwood’s D3 teams, along with Bethel had solid finishes to the regular season. In the past, the Lindenwood teams have cruised to the finals but this year Bethel will have a lot to say about that. The Bethel Wildcats finished their season with five straight wins and look ready to make a run this coming weekend. The #3 seed Bethel will take on #6 seed St. Charles CC in the quarterfinals. In other quarterfinal action, #4 Mizzou will play #5 Illinois State for a chance in the semifinals. The #1 seed Lindenwood Gold and #2 Lindenwood Black will await the winners of the quarterfinal games. The division 3 championship will be played Sunday at 2pm.
St. Charles CC (JC) will automatically be crowned the Junior College division champions. The defending JC division national champions are 6-10 on the season with one game remaining against Lindenwood Black (D3).
With the seeds set and the teams ready to compete, the Great Plains Regional Championships are sure to be thrilling. The winner of each division this coming weekend will be awarded a bid to the 2015 NCRHA National Championships in Independence, Missouri April 8th-12th.
