GPCIHL  November 26th, 2013 at 8:12PM
The Lindenwood D1 roller hockey team swept competition at the Rocky Mountain Inter-regional in Colorado Springs, Colorado November 23-24, winning all four games of the weekend against some of the top D1 teams in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA).

Lindenwood earned a 10-3 win against Cal Poly to begin the tournament on Saturday morning. Casey Escarcega scored three goals and assisted on three more to lead the Lions with six points. Brennan Luscombe scored a hat trick with three goals and Cody Kettler had a goal and an assist. Kevin Dwyer stopped 17 of 20 shots in net for the Lions.

In the second game of the day, Lindenwood defeated Arizona State 8-2. The game was the first meeting between the teams since the Lions knocked ASU out from the 2013 NCRHA National Championship tournament with a 6-5 win in a heated contest April 12, 2013. Saturday's game was drastically different than the close battle in April as the Lions scored 7 seconds into the first period and never looked back. Escarcega and Luscombe each recorded two goals an assist. Dwyer stopped 19 of 21 shots. Lindenwood scored three power play goals and two short-handed tallies.

Escarcega and Luscombe led the Lions in the third game of the day against the University of California-Santa Barbara with a goal and an assist each. The Lions jumped out to a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period but UC-Santa Barbara scored two goals in the second to tie the game 4-4. Kettler netted the game-winning goal at the 7:36 mark of the third period and Lions went on to win 6-4. Dwyer returned to the net and stopped 17 of 21 shots.

In the final game of the weekend on Sunday the Lions faced the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, the defending NCRHA Division II champions now in their first season at the Division I level. Lindenwood defeated the Mountain Lions 5-2 with four third period goals. Kettler led the team with two goals and two assists. Dwyer stopped 19 of 21 shots between the pipes for the Lions.

Lindenwood improved to 14-0-0 overall this season. The Lions are one of only three undefeated NCRHA Division I teams along with Neumann and Michigan State.

The team has an extended break for the holidays. Lindenwood returns to action in January at the Second Annual Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association Inter-regional Tournament in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., where they will defend their first place finish from 2013. Lindenwood joins some of the top teams from the Midwest and East Coast at the event, including: Michigan State, Neumann University, Hofstra University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Rhode Island, and SUNY Brockport.
The Lindenwood Gold (B) Lions also made the trip to Colorado Springs as they took on division 1 opponents in Colorado State, Cal Poly, Arizona State, and UC Santa Barbara.  The B-Gold Lions finished the weekend with a respectable 2-2 record. The highlight of the weekend though may have been the B-Gold teams win against UC Santa Barbara.  The Lions were down 5-0 late in the 2nd period and then scored 7 unanswered goals to steal the victory 7-5.  "This was one game I will never forget," Coach Hilke said, "The guys really battled and I am very proud about the way they responded late in the game. They could have just thrown in the towel but they didnt."
The Lindenwood (B) team will be back in action January 25th-26th in Mt. Pleasant, PA. The B-Gold Lions finish the first semester with a 9-3 record.
